Heavy Birthday is Alex Lee of Melbourne synth punk group Repairs (Hozac, Nihilistic Orbs). Lee self released his Border Menace EP earlier in 2016, a deadly slow mope along a polluted red horizon line, palpable discontent at the impending digital surveillance age apocalypse beckoning just beneath. On his first release as Heavy Birthday however, Lee expertly summons a faint but recognisable essence of esperance throughout this desperately melancholic driving suite. Big city sounds slowed down to a pace reached when the day is over and their purpose is rendered pointless, slathered in compressed swathes of languid textures and emotive atmospherics.
